WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Sept. 26, 2023 – Eatertainment destination Smash Park has expanded its recreational offerings with the addition of axe-throwing lanes at its original West Des Moines location. Like pickleball – Smash Park’s flagship activity – axe-throwing has seen a surge in popularity and is enjoyed by casual and serious players alike.
Smash Park is offering a new twist on traditional axe-throwing with an interactive system that provides an arcade-like experience. Traditional axe-throwing is available as well, but those who want more than the bullseye can choose between 10 different games to play with varying difficulty levels. Sensors provide automatic scoring and players can create avatars and build custom profiles for repeat playing.
Smash Park CEO Monty Lockyear said axe-throwing was an opportunity to further diversify the venue’s entertainment options and bring a new way to play to Iowa. “It’s a unique experience that we think will broaden our appeal to a wide range of guests,” he said. “Our axe-throwing offering is a fun group activity that’s really engaging and different – not to mention, a great stress reliever.”
Lockyear said the new Smash Park locations set to open in Omaha and the Twin Cities will also feature axe-throwing lanes.
For recreation, it’s $25/person to rent an axe-throwing lane for an hour and participants must be at least 14 years of age. Included in the price is a personal guide – or “Axepert” – to train participants on proper throwing technique and tips. The lanes are open Monday through Friday beginning at 4 p.m., and all-day Saturday and Sunday. The activity is available for parties and corporate events. For more competitive players, Smash Park will host axe-throwing leagues.
